Artsy Kids Need Coaches & Clubs Too…

Yes. Artsy kids need to feel they are part of something bigger than themselves. They need the same opportunities as sporty kids to have the mentoring of a coach and a commitment to a club where they are accountable and learning the soft skills needed to increase their self-confidence, to become good citizens, to have a more global outlook in their community.

“Sport can teach values such as fairness, team building, equality, discipline, inclusion, perseverance and respect.” (Values Education through Sport - UNESCO) Art can too!

We have all heard the science that the arts are important in a well-rounded school curriculum. It helps with critical thinking, problem solving, spatial math, focus, concentration and so much more. Good schools incorporate art programs because they understand art is essential in the development of a child’s overall education. Typically, students have access to an art class once a week. And that is it. Once per week. For one hour.

For an artsy child, they crave more. They too want to participate in an activity with like-minded friends. Where they are able to develop their social skills and improve self-esteem. Often, they are left on the sidelines, listening to their friends discuss a great practice or a victorious game, longing to feel that level of support.

So, what happens when a child joins an art club? A place where they are coached and encouraged to develop and experiment with their art. Where they collaborate with their teammates to launch their next art show. Where they become the “quarterback” or mentor to the new members. Do you see where I’m going with this? All the wonderful developmental life skills that sports encourages in kids…the arts also encourage.

I have seen it. For 17+ years, I have seen my students thrive in their art clubs. The older members become team leaders and mentors; the younger kids are thrilled to be working next to a seasoned student artist. They are respectful and supportive of one another, helping each other gain confidence. In after school programs, they proudly discuss art club, just as the basketball team discusses practice. They are excited about their work!

And it doesn’t stop there. Countless times I have had teachers come to me about my art club students commenting on their improvement in history, english, technology, math, etc. It is a remarkable phenomenon and my personal goal is to represent these kids. Let’s give them the opportunity to b-artsy!
